The German Wine Institute (Deutsches Weininstitut) invited wine professionals to discover and taste the diverse, world-class styles wines produced by German vineyards. Mainly on display were Rieslings and Pinots noirs wines. Among other grape wine varieties were also Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Gewurztraminer and Silvaner.
It was a great pleasure to have the Riesling & Co. once again back in Quebec and Canada this year. This Montreal professional wine tasting event was held at the spacious premisses of SCENA, a French restaurant on Jacques-Cartier Pier in Montreal's Old Port. This is a different location than where the previous two such events were held in Montreal. You can read about the 2015 event here, and the 2016 event here.
20 German producers participated this year. All had an amazing variety and quality of wines to offer for tasting. The pace was abuzz with a great number of wine professional which included wine buyers such as restaurateurs and hoteliers and also those from the SAQ, as well as local wine promoters and sellers, wine connoisseurs, and even wine tasting apprentices.
LEITZ Weinngut vineyard representative was also offering to taste four different non-alcoholic wines all under the trade name Eins Zwei Zero. Many attendees showed a special interest for these non-alcoholic wines, although they were not listed in the event's catalogue and were brought to the show by the producer as a last minute decision. I personally was amazed by how good they all tasted: white and sparkling white, as well as rose and sparkling rose. Unfortunately, only the white one is presently being sold by some SAQ outlets.
Generous food was also offered to those who attended the event and was much appreciated by all.

Riesling & Co. 2016

The German Wine Institute in collaboration with German Wine Canada held its annual professional wine tasting at the Galerie Lounge TD (Maison du Festival). This event also represented a Montreal stop of the 31 day across Canada tour of German Riesling Wine.
The event started with an in-depth seminar on German Riesling wines, held over lunch time, and hosted by Ulrike Lenhardt from the Deutsches Weininstitut. Ten wines, the bottles of which are shown in the photo at the top of the article, were tasted. A four course meal was served to discover the perfect marriage of wines and food. The seminar provided a trove of information about which wines came from which regions in Germany, and even elaborated on soil composition and specific whether pasterns of various Germany's wine growing regions.
Overall, 23 German wine distributors and producers participated in this German wine tasting event. Their booth and displays welcomed many industry professional, local wine connoisseurs, wine promoters, and retail store wine buyers.
There was also plenty of food from the local Quebec producers to make the tasting event even more enjoyable.

New Generation Riesling Wines

Today, Germany has presented its new generation of Riesling wines.
The event was held in the Rio Tinto building's art gallery, located right next to the Place des Festivals, at the very centre of Montreal in the Quartier des spectacles. The place was an excellent choice for the venue, as the paintings on the wals complemented and enhanced the wine presentation and the overall wine tasting experience.
Wines from 22 German vineyards were presented, ranging from dry to very sweet. All were New Generation wines, featuring a reinvented taste and grape composition, yet made by traditional wine producing establishments. Even some bottles were redecorated, with blue colour being the flavour of the day.
The wines were delightful, light, and refreshing. The attendance was plentiful. People waited patiently for their turn to experience the New Generation German wines.
There was also plenty of food which helped to balance the wine tasting experience.
